End of term report

Last updated : 12 May 2007 By Millwall Mad First XI
Phew! Who'd be a football fan? Last season Millwall went from early favourites for the title to rank outsiders on the brink of relegation in a matter of weeks before the board acted and ousted Nigel "Useless" Spackman and replaced him with Willie Donachie. We then went from favourites for the drop to play-off contenders and almost achieved the least likely comeback from the dead since Lazarus complained that he wasn't feeling to well.

Over the course of the past year with seen a number of players arrive - and depart - and had the odd loanee who has impressed (step forward Messrs Smith and Haynes) but for the purposes of this review with only included first team squad members who are still at The Den, so don't expect to see a harsh tirade against Maurice Ross... We're saving that for later!

LENNY PIDGELEY
Millwall Mad Season Review
Flappable rather than dependable. A decent shot-stopper but more was expected from the former Chelsea goalkeeper. He can't kick for toffee and he's made mistakes but he has also kept The Lions' in the game on occasion.
Verdict: Must try harder next term
Grade: B

CHRIS DAY
Millwall Mad Season Review
Chris Day A decent back-up option on the bench but Day failed to take the opportunity of becoming the club's first choice keeper when former boss Nigel Spackman decided to put him the starting line-up.
Verdict: Honest pro but may not be around much longer
Grade: C+

DANNY SENDA
Millwall Mad Season Review
Revelation of the season. Arrived during a period of uncertainty and poor results to replace Maurice Ross and make the right-back position his own. Fantastic coming forward, solid at the back.
Verdict: One of the first names on the team sheet
Grade: A

TONY CRAIG
Millwall Mad Season Review
Still needs to work on his weaknesses and hasn't really progressed this season. However, Willy seems to like him and he got better towards the end of the season but he may not be a long-term option, despite what the manager thinks.
Verdict: Make or break season ahead
Grade: B

ZOUMANA BAKAYOGO
Millwall Mad Season Review
Has great pace and is good getting forward. Has a nice touch on the ball but never really challenged Craig for the left-back berth.
Verdict: A decent back up at the moment
Grade: C+

RICHARD SHAW
Millwall Mad Season Review
Solid, dependable and worth of his Player of the Year award. Not much was expected of him when he arrived but he quickly became the backbone of the side. Age may be against him but he's worth at least another year.
Verdict: Shamed the youngsters with his performances
Grade: A+

PAUL ROBINSON
Millwall Mad Season Review
Captain Marvel. Has led by example all season and chipped in with a couple of goals as well. Rarely made mistakes and formed a good partnership with Shaw.
Verdict: Spine of the team
Grade: A+

ZAK WHITBREAD
Millwall Mad Season Review
A disappointing season from the former Liverpool player. Injuries and a loss of form didn't help, not to mention being played out of position by Nigel Spackman, but more was expected.
Verdict: Disappointing but will bounce back
Grade: C

MARK PHILLIPS
Millwall Mad Season Review
Came back into the side after another injury lay-off, looked half-decent for a bit and then had a nightmare against Leyton Orient before being sent out on loan to Darlington. Probably won't be back.
Verdict: Supped in the Last Chance Saloon
Grade: C

ALAN DUNNE
Millwall Mad Season Review
Another player from which more was expected. Has the talent, has the skill but doesn't appear to have the motivation. Willie Donachie loves him though, which saw him play when others seemed more deserving.
Verdict: Must sort out his attitude
Grade: C+

MARVIN ELLIOTT
Millwall Mad Season Review
Played below par all season and only seemed to pick up towards the end when alongside Dave Brammer. Rumours suggest he only put the effort in when scouts from other clubs were watching and he is capable of much, much more.
Verdict: Will get better, but probably won't be here next term
Grade: B-

DAVE BRAMMER
Millwall Mad Season Review
You argue that Dave Brammer saved our season. The player we all expected Derek McInnes to be. Flawless, faultless and real battler.
Verdict: The next great Lions midfielder?
Grade: A

ALI FUSENI
Millwall Mad Season Review
Young, raw and with a lot of talent. Never let anyone down during his brief run in the first and one for the future.
Verdict: The next bright young thing
Grade: B

SAMY-OYAMNE MAWENE
Millwall Mad Season Review
Showed one or two nice touches but needs to adapt to the English game. Could possibly flower during the summer.
Verdict: Worth another look
Grade: B-

NEAL ARDLEY
Millwall Mad Season Review
Injury plagued his season, but for that he may have done some great things in The Lions midfield. Question marks surround his future at the club.
Verdict: Never really got going
Grade: B-

JODY MORRIS
Millwall Mad Season Review
Waste of space.
Verdict: Close the door on your way out
Grade: E

TOM BRIGHTON
Millwall Mad Season Review
Was arguably our most impressive player under Spackman before an innocuous training ground injury robbed him of much of the season. Came back a bit rusty but still showed promise.
Verdict: The future's bright
Grade: B+

FILIPE MORAIS
Millwall Mad Season Review
More, much, much more was expected from the Chelsea lad. Looked like a flash Harry and played like one too. Could cross a ball and do fancy tricks but didn't have the stomach for a fight.
Verdict: Must toughen up
Grade: B-

CHRIS HACKETT
Millwall Mad Season Review
A decent winger who had a good spell around Christmas time before the inevitable injury. Came back a bit jaded but should return.
Verdict: One of the better players of the season
Grade: A-

MARVIN WILLIAMS
Millwall Mad Season Review
Marvellous Marvin should have come of age this term but efforts to add a bit of bulk to his slender frame back-fired a bit and a lost a yard of pace. His disappointment at being left out of the team so him get in a strop and he still needs to learn one or two things before he becomes the finished article.
Verdict: Failed to fulfill promise so far
Grade: B

CHRIS ZEBROSKI
Millwall Mad Season Review
Hard to tell what Zebroski's best position is - at the moment he is neither fish nor fowl after being switched from centre forward to left wing and back again. Big, raw and a bit gangly, he at least shows some determination to succeed.
Verdict: A decent squad member
Grade: B

NEIL HARRIS
Millwall Mad Season Review
Went on holiday to Nottingham Forest for a couple of years in order to recharge his batteries and came back to save us from League Two. Some had their doubts but they were quickly dispelled as Bomber began etching his name in the record books once again. Legend.
Verdict: Return of the prodigal son.
Grade: A+

DARREN BYFIELD
Millwall Mad Season Review
Byfield was always going to score goals in this division and a return of sixteen having missed three months of the season went some way to showing The Lions faithful of what could've been had he stayed fit. Those that booed him on his return should be ashamed of themselves.
Verdict: Baby boomer
Grade: A

POUL HUBERTZ
Millwall Mad Season Review
Identi-kit for the common folk hero: Make him stand out from the crowd by being built like a brick-shit house. Give him blonde hair and a Viking heritage. Bless him with a never-say-die attitude and spirit that walks a fine line between respect and going over the top. Give him the kind of skill set that never makes you quite sure of what he's going to do next. Finally, let him score some important goals. Arise Sir Hooooobertz!
Verdict: Cult Demi-god
Grade: A-

BEN MAY
Millwall Mad Season Review
The Great White Dope. For some reason Ben May is highly thought of at Millwall but he may have missed the boat. There are now three better strikers in front of him and his goal-to-games ratio is poor. Injury and shoplifting from B&Q hasn't helped his cause but if he fails to show up next season, he can forget about a career at The Den.
Verdict: Not as good as he thinks he is
Grade: D-

WILLIE DONACHIE
Millwall Mad Season Review
Not a popular choice when he took over but he did have some support in certain quarters and went on to prove the doubters wrong in spades. Revived the club's fortunes and almost achieved the impossible by nailing an unexpected play-off place. He does have a fondness for certain players though and some of his selections could be question but you can't argue with his results since taking over.
Verdict: Watch this space
Grade: A-
