A Word to the Wise

Wise: Not a happy bunny
Dennis Wise appears to be a little unsettled. Having enjoyed something of a close relationship with out-going Millwall chairman Theo Paphitis, the diminutive midfielder is finding life under his new boss something of chore and has already had a public falling out with The Lions' new supremo, Jeff Burnige.

As a result of this tiff, the manager is now looking for assurances that his position as Lions' boss safe.

"I don't know how the chairman's appointment will affect my position," said Wise. "It really is up to him because he's the one who will be running the show next season.

"I'm contracted to Millwall for another year and I want to do my best to help the club get into The Premiership.

"Whether or not he decides I am the right person for that job is his decision."

The two men appear to be at odds on the direction the club will take in the near future. Burnige wants a return to the days when Millwall's Youth Academy churned out the likes of Steven Reid, Tim Cahill and Paul Ifill on a regular basis. But Wise isn't convince that this is the best option for the club as it stands and in order to make a push for promotion, the side still needs one or two experienced heads.

"Jeff wants to focus on bringing youngsters up through the ranks. But if you don't have enough quality coming through, then you have to look elsewhere.

"All the teams around us are bringing in new players. And our strategy could cost us promotion."

He added: “We are not looking at buying ₤20 million players. What we want would not cost us too much.”

The manager is clearly upset that the club's new chairman blocked his move for former England defender Graeme Le Saux and he feels that he is not getting the backing he feels he deserves.

"This wasn't in the brochure when I signed up"

"We felt we were going to have a good chance at getting promoted this year. But all of a sudden, things have changed. "
