Brighton fans offer support

Following the disgraceful article in yesterday's Sun newspaper, Millwall Football Club have received messages of support from Brighton fans who attended the game, all of whom attacked the journalist in question's version of events.

Following a post on the Brighton website North Stand Chat, a number of Seagull fans took the time to email the club to rubbish the report Raymond Enisuoh and express their anger at the way the club had been "stitched up" by a national newspaper in such an underhanded manner.

The club, meanwhile, have issued a second statement and have not ruled out legal action against News International over the article:

"This story is right up there with 'Freddie Starr ate my hamster' in terms of its incredulity.

It really does beggar belief that someone can write a piece like this, riddled with innaccuracies, and pass it off as a piece of serious journalism.

What really saddens and sickens us is that this sort of thing serves to undermine the fight against racism that is going on at Millwall, within football and in society at large.

If we had seen Nazi salutes, or heard Sieg Heil chants in our ground on Saturday, they would have been reported by others, caught on CCTV, and the most rigorous action under the law taken against the perpetrators. As a first generation immigrant, there is no way that our chairman Theo Paphitis would tolerate such behaviour. The simple fact, however, is that we have never witnessed anything of that sort at The Den.

Not a shred of evidence has been put forward to substantiate the assertions made by Mr Enisuoh in his article. Moreover, if he witnessed acts of racism, why did he not report them to police or stewards in any one of the many ways available to him, as indictated prominently in our match programme?

The effect of this type of irresponsible journalism is to endanger those on the ground trying to tackle the issue. The fight against racism, like the war on terror, is a very serious one. We feel extremely demoralised by this latest attempt to demonise Millwall Football Club, and can only wonder how long before some media organisation decides to plant people within our ground making Nazi salutes.

How much further can we allow our press to go before we call a halt to this sort of agenda-driven nonsense?"
