Fans raise a grand for Poppy Appeal

Millwall fans put their hands in their pockets to raise over a thousand pounds for this year's Poppy Appeal before The Lions game against Leeds United on Saturday. What's more remarkable is that they managed it in just 45 minutes.

The event was organised by Melanie Bingham Atmore, who was assisted by eleven offers who volunteered their services through the House of Fun website.

"Millwall supporters are very behind our troops," she told the Southwark News. "But because there's such a problem with getting collectors they haven't been able to contribute. People are out there who want to give their money. People need to get up and help the appeal.

"They were just so pleased people were selling poppies. They were so generous, some of them putting in £20 notes."

£1,142.64 was raised in total for the British Legion appeal and the group are hoping to organise a second collection this weekend.
