Byfield: Ligament damage
Millwall striker Darren Byfield will be out for at least the next three weeks after sustaining ligament damage against Leyton Orient on Tuesday night. It was feared that the former Gillingham player had broken his ankle but once the swelling had reduced scans revealed the full extent of the injury.

"I heard a crack and my immediate thought was that I'd broken my ankle," admitted Byfield. "As it turns out it is only ligament damage which means I'll be out of action for a few weeks rather than months.

"It is still very frustrating because having done all the hard work in pre-season I had been really looking forward to the League campaign getting underway. The signs are already there that when all the new players, which is most of us, begin to gel we are going to be a decent side.

"Also, I was really enjoying playing in front of the Millwall fans. The noise they made on the opening day of the season was amazing, and again on Tuesday night they were very loud.

"I'm not sure at this stage exactly how long I'll be out of action. I have to rest for the next few days and then start to build the ankle up again. I'll have to be patient, but I can't wait to get back."

Meanwhile manager Nigel Spackman is considering bringing in a loan signing while the striker is out of action to cover the gap left up front.

"We've already made some enquiries," he revealed, "but teams don't want to loan players out at the moment it seems.

"Naturally we are relieved that Darren's injury is not more serious, but he's still going to be missing for a number of weeks, and with Ben May also sidelined for quite a while it leaves us a bit short in the striking department again.

"We'll have to get on with it, though, and I'm sure that whoever plays at Chesterfield on Saturday will be right up for the job."
