Grant to get fresh start

Millwall boss Willie Donachie last night reveal his hand in terms of his striking options should want-away-hitman Darren Byfield get his wish and leave the club.

Speaking at the Fans' Forum, Donachie confirmed that Byfield is no longer committed to the cause and doesn't figure in the manager's plans for this weekend's opener at Doncaster Rovers, which leaves the door open for former Gillingham striker Gavin Grant.

Grant was cleared of a conspiracy to commit murder charge last week and is back training with the club and Donachie insists the player will be given a chance to prove his worth, although he admits the striker may need to go out on loan in order to improve his fitness.

The Lions boss also revealed that midfielders Tom Brighton and Danny Spiller could be used up front should circumstances dictate.

However, speaking about the recent departures of Poul Hubertz and Marvin Williams, Donachie scotched claims that appeared in the South London Press that both players didn't want to leave The Den.

Hubertz didn't want to stay if he was going to be fifth-choice in the pecking order while "delusions of grandeur" was to blame for Williams departure, with Donachie hinting that had the player stayed, he would have become part of the manager's first choice sixteen in the wake of Byfield's impending departure.
