Goals from Barry Hayles and Alan Dunne secured the points as Millwall beat Gillingham for the first time in the League since 1998.

The Gills have held something of a jinx over The Lions since then, with only a victory in the Southern Area Semi-Final of the AWS Trophy preventing the Kent side from having things all their way.

But despite the result, last night's encounter was a depressing affair, only livened up by three excellent goals. Millwall's negativity under Wise and Wilkins reached a nadir when Jody Morris decided to send a freekick on the edge of the Gillingham box back 45 yards to Darren Ward in defence.

With the fans crying out for fast, attacking football, The Lions played deep and were too defensive for their own good and it was only a matter of luck and poor finishing that prevented Andy Hessenthaler's men from equalising.

A good result, but a very poor display.
