Former Millwall striker Teddy Sheringham has been awarded the MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list it was revealed today.

Tony Cascarino's former striking partner said he was "deeply honoured" to receive the award, which many believe was for his tally of 93 League goals in 220 appearances for The Lions.

During his nine-year spell at The Den, Sheringham helped the club to a unique treble of Second Division Championship, Football League Trophy and Evening Standard Five-a-Side title but after he left for Nottingham Forest his career declined rapidly and he never really hit the same heights again, although he did apparently win another, lesser treble with a semi-professional Northern side called Manchester United, who some fans may remember from the 2004 FA Cup Final where we let them win.

He was also capped 51 times by England, who apologised profusely for not picking him earlier. He will receive his award from the Queen, who's father was a big Lions fan, later this year.

"It is fantastic to receive this award, I am hugely honoured and still can't believe I get paid for doing something I love so much.

"I know how lucky I am and I am determined to go on playing for as long as I can.

"I have had a great career with so many people supporting me. I won't name them, but they know who they are and I am very grateful. This is their award as much as mine."

Sheringham, who is affectionately still known as Judas at The Den, was a big Millwall fan as a child but later went on to play for the team he supported as a kid - Tottenham Hotpur. Sorry, West Ham. Or was it Portsmouth. Anyway, congratulations, Teddy!
