Lions legend dies

Millwall football club have announced the passing of one of its former greats, J.R. (Reg) Smith, at the age of 91.

Smith joined Millwall way back in 1935 and went on to become one of the Lions' greatest players in the Club's history, if not the greatest of the inter-war period. A tricky left winger, he played in the side that lost narrowly to Sunderland in the FA Cup Semi-Final in 1937 (2-1) before winning a Third Division championship medal in 1938.

Later that year, his form for The Lions in Division Two earned him two England caps against Norway and Northern Ireland. He scored twice in a 4-1 on his debut against Norway and would have surely gone on to win a dozen more caps but for the Second World War. He was the last Millwall player to win a full England cap.

Reg continued to represent the club during the war years and played for England in four wartime internationals before going into management. He lead Falkirk to the Scottish Cup Final in 1957 before taking over the hotseat at Millwall from 1959-61.
