Lions set to appeal against FA decision

Millwall Football Club have announced its intention to appeal against the Football Association's decision to find the club guilty of misconduct over events that marred The Lions' Carling Cup clash against Liverpool last October.

As reported on Millwall Mad last Friday, the FA's commission ruled that The Lions had "failed to ensure that its spectators and/or persons purporting to be its supporters refrained from racist and/or abusive behaviour" in breach of FA rule 22(a).

In a statement released on the official website, the club have argued that the ruling "flagrantly contradicts the facts placed before the commission" and have taken issue with the suggestion that the stewarding on the night was "woefully inadequate".

"The decision flies in the face of evidence given by Senior Match Commander, Chief Superintendent Archie Torrance of the Metropolitan Police", reads the statement. "We do not accept that our fans (even a small minority of them) were behaving in a racist manner on the night in question, and nor do we accept that we could have done any more than we actually did to monitor the behaviour of our fans because no allegations of racist behaviour were made to stewards or police at the match.

"Rick Parry, Chief Executive of Liverpool FC, in a written statement to the hearing, stated: "For the avoidance of any doubt, we do not allege in any way that there was any form of racist chanting during the evening from Millwall supporters."

"Our unparalleled efforts to combat the scourge of racism were commended by The Chairman of the "Lets Kick Racism Out of Football" campaign, Lord Herman Ousley himself during the course of the proceedings.

"Simon Hughes, MP for Bermondsey, Liberal Democrat President and Millwall supporter said: "I was at the game. I certainly saw no racist or abusive behaviour myself and the stewarding seemed to me to be good at all times. I received no complaints at the match or later. Millwall Football Club, its Chairman and Board and its staff have acted vigorously over many years to improve behaviour in and around the club. I hope all this good work on the day and on all other occasions will be taken into account."
