Little steps down

Joe Little has resigned as head of The Lions Youth scheme following the club's decision to downscale their academy to a centre of excellence to save costs.

Little, who retired through injury at the tender age of 18, was a surprise choice when he was appointed to take on the day-to-day running of the club's academy but he surprised many with his application and approaching, guiding the youth team to a number of notable victories in last season's FA Youth Cup, but the 27-year-old has now decided to move on rather than oversee the centre of excellence.

"Everyone really wanted me to stay at the club and take on the school of excellence," he told the South London Press. "It just wasn't the direction I wanted to go.

"Though I fully understand the club's reasons for going to a school of excellence, it wasn't what I signed up to do.

"I have been in constant dialogue with the manager Kenny Jackett about the change and he wants to make the transition as smooth as possible, so I will support that as much as I can."
