Nethers fears FA cop out

Former Millwall Captain Stuart Nethercott believes The Lions are likely to feel the effects of any possible financial punishments handed down to them by the Football Association more than West Ham United, despite reports that The Premiership side are set to be hit with a big fine.

Both teams are in the dock after crowd trouble marred the clubs' Second Round Carling Cup tie at Upton Park. West Ham won the game 3-1 but there were three separate pitch invations during the match and both teams were forced to leave the pitch on at least one occasion.

However, Nethercott, who was skipper when Millwall won the third tier in 2000/01, believes that had the trouble occured at The Den then the punishment served would have been much greater.

"If this had happened at Millwall the FA would be clamoring to close the ground down," Nethercott told The Daily Mail.  "But as it happened at a Premier League ground - which is a one-off these days - they won't hit them anywhere near as hard.

"It was certainly no surprise to me that it went off - but being hit in the pocket won’t bother West Ham financially yet a big fine for Millwall wouldn’t help the club at all."
