The much-mooted regeneration of The Den took a step closer today after it was announced that architects SMC Alsop had been appointed to oversee the "complete regeneration" of the ground and the immediate surrounding area.

Will Alsop, head of SMC Alsop, told The Architects Journal that the scheme would be "a huge mixed-use development that would be based round the re-jigging of The Den and a little bit beyond.

"It would put football at the heart of the community, along with arts and eating, drinking, living and a bit of working."

Mr. Alsop's plans have yet to be submitted to Lewisham Council but it is hoped that the scheme will involve the new tube station - Surrey Canal Road - that is currently under construction.

Millwall chief executive Heather Rabbatts confirmed that the club had appointed Alsop and issued the a promise to supporters. 'Whatever we do at Millwall," said Rabbatts, "The stadium and the club's fans will be at its heart."
