Wilkins, who had a brief spell with The Lions under Jimmy Nicholl, is a personal friend of both Wise and Millwall chairman Theo Paphitis and has agreed to take on the role as a favour to both parties.
Speaking to the club's official website, Paphitis explained the decision. "Dennis and I spent some time discussing the situation on Wednesday, and I'm pleased that he has consented to take on this role, and that Ray has agreed to help. We want to take our time in finding the right man to do the job on a permanent basis, and I anticipate that Dennis will be in charge for a period of around four weeks.
"Both Dennis and I have taken advantage of our personal friendship with Ray in asking him to help us out through this transition period and we're very grateful that he has agreed to do so."
