Smith was originally on trial with the club before the start of the 2006/07 but was released after the injury, which occured when he stepped on a some glass during a holiday with friends, failed to heal sufficiently in time for the management team to cast their eyes over him.
The 20-year-old was originally spotted while playing in Liege, Belgium, but after a brief spell in Morecambe and Germany earlier in the season the talented wing-back has yet to secure a club and his hoping to win a place with the club he has apparently supported all his life.
