Smith, 22, began his career at Arsenal before joining The Lions from Derby County in the summer of 2007 after a brief loan spell at The Den. However, a string of injuries limited his appearances and with the club aiming to slash their high wage bill, Smith was considered to be surplus to requirements by manager Kenny Jackett.
It is believed that no fee will be involved, with The Saints simply taking over the player's contract and registration.
