Sunderland chasing Whitbread

According to reports in today's News of the World, Sunderland are keen on Millwall defender Zak Whitbread and are said to be prepared to offer a fee of around £1.5 million for the American.

The 25-year-old has been attracting interest after a string of impressive performances in the heart of defence and had been the subject of an approach by West Bromwich Albion last year, but The Lions have managed to keep hold of the former Liverpool player as they look for promotion back to The Championship.

However, should the Sunderland offer prove too tempting for the Millwall board they'll hope to get as much money as possible as Liverpool insisted on a large sell-on clause as part of the original deal that originally brought Whitbread to The Den.
