A clause in the transfer deal that saw the youngster move to Stoke City in the summer of 2005 was recently triggered after Sweeney completed a certain number of games for The Potters but according to sources within Millwall they are either unable/unwilling to pay the outstanding balance.
Millwall Mad understand that the matter has already been referred to the Football Association with a ruling expected sometime in the next fortnight, with the possibility of the player returning to The Den on a free transfer in lieu of monies owed.
Whether Sweeney would be welcomed by the crowd after turning his back on The Lions two years ago remains to be seen, but here in the MM dungeons we're taking the news with a pinch of salt until something more concrete develops.
