Theo answers his critics

Millwall Chairman Theo Paphitis hit back at the criticism aimed in his direction during last night's home defeat to Wigan Athletic in an interview on BBC London 94.9 this evening.

During the broadcast, Paphitis defended the club's stance on signing new players and made assurances to the fans that funds will be made available should Dennis Wise choose to sign a player.

"I can't pretend that some of the chanting on Tuesday night was pleasant," he confessed, "and there are some things I'm not at liberty to say at the moment. But this in a nutshell is the situation.

"The season before last, we made a loss of some four and a half million pounds. Last season, the FA Cup run brought in around two and a half million which put us in a much healthier position.

"The sale of Tim netted another million and a half, not the two million we might have hoped to get had he gone to Palace. All the money from the sale of Tim and a bit more is available to Dennis and Ray to spend. At the moment they are setting their sights high, and I back them wholeheartedly in that.

"It is clear to all of us that we need another three or four players to strengthen the squad in addition to those we have already brought in. We don't want to lower our sights, but if in another fortnight's time we haven't got the players we want we might have to think again."

Paphitis then confirmed that he will be stepping down as chairman at the end of the season, although he indicated that he would like to continue as a director.

"I've had some great times over the last seven years," he revealed. "And I'm grateful to Millwall and the fans for enabling me to be part of some wonderful moments. But with the pressure of my other businesses the time is coming for me to hand over the reins to someone else."
