Darren Ward has been voted Player of the Year by the Millwall Supporters Club, despite having one of the worst mullets this side of the 1980s.

The popular defender beat off stiff opposition from fellow defender and winner in 2001 Matt Lawrence and midfielder Tim Cahill to nab the award for the first time in his Lions' career. Voting went right to the wire and in the end, there was only a handful of votes seperating Ward and runner-up Cahill.

Speaking to the official Millwall website, a triumphant Ward said: "I'm thrilled to be honest. I've never won anything like this before. Back in August I set myself certain targets which included promotion, and whilst we haven't achieved that it's still been a great season with the Cup Final to look forward to.

"I'm surprised that as a defender I have won the award, because Timmy has been scoring some important goals and making the headlines. But we've done pretty well defensively, and Matty Lawrence along with Muzzy and Robbie Ryan have to take a lot of credit along with the keepers."
