Wilkins leaves The Den

Former England captain Ray Wilkins has quit his consultancy role at The Den having been employed by the club on a casual basis since the middle of last season.

Many fans blamed Dennis Wise's former assistant for the appointment of Nigel Spackman has manager in the summer and Wilkins was forced to answer questions from a number of angry fans as he left the ground following The Lions' recent defeat at home to Northampton Town.

However, in explaining the move, chairman Stewart Till tried to put a more positive spin on the situation.

"There were a number of changes at board level at the end of last season, and we felt that having someone of Ray's experience to advise us would be a great advantage," explained Till.

"It was always the intention on both sides that once the season was underway and everyone had become comfortable with their new roles, Ray would leave us."
