Dennis Wise has revealed that he tried to bring in two new players during the transfer window last month, according to today's Evening Standard.

The under-fire player/boss apparently tried to sign former Mark McGhee target Rob Hulse, defender Michael Gray and midfielder Shaun Derry but his efforts were blocked by the board. All three players ended up going to Leeds United, the club Wise himself was linked with following Ken Bates' takeover.

The revelation that the manager has tried to sign yet another striker has caused some anger with Millwall fans, who feel the current strikeforce of Barry Hayles, Scott Dobie and Danny Dichio are struggling because of a lack of creativity in midfield. The Lions failed to score for the third game on the bounce as they crashed to their sixth home defeat of the season on Saturday.

Wise now appears to have declared open war on the board and has already clash with new chairman Jeff Burnige.

Speaking of his ill-fated attempt to sign Hulse, Gray and Derry, Wise said: "It is disappointing when you are close, the time is right but you are told you can't sign anyone.

"I am here to do a job but it becomes very difficult when I have to bring through a lot of youngsters."
