Wise would have retired

Wise, who signed for The Lions until the end of next season, admitted he was on the verge of quitting before Millwall came in for him.

He said: "If no-one had come in for me I would have packed it in because I didn't want to play park football.

"I've got to be realistic because I'm 35 years old but I never thought my career was over.

"I've heard it said that it's a risk taking me on but I don't think it's a gamble. I just want to play football and my aim is to win promotion."

Lions chairman Theo Paphitis said Wise would not receive the £10,000 per week being talked about in some circles.

He said: "The figures quoted in the press have been hugely exaggerated. He will be earning a fraction of what he got at Leicester."

Wise has been handed the numdber 19 shirt at Millwall and should make his Lions debut in the game with Coventry this weekend.
