A late Danny Dichio goal gave Millwall a hard-earned and valuable win against disappointing Coventry City.

The Lions - beaten 4-0 at Highfield Road in the spring - deserved the points as Dennis Wise predictably provided all the major talking points in a match that lacked quality from start to finish.

Michael Doyle forced the first save after 15 minutes with a 20-yard drive, after he had latched onto Eddie Johnson's lay-off.

Adrian Serioux's long throws were causing havoc in the Coventry area - one 40-yard howitzer in the 17th minute fell to Darren Ward, but his shot was blocked well by Calum Davenport.

Scott Shearer was forced into an acrobatic save when Millwall player-manager Wise's cross found Dichio.

While the City defence wrongly appealed for offside, Dichio had time and space to pick his spot but his header was expertly parried by Shearer.

After the break, Wise and Patrick Suffo squared up to each other and Wise dropped to the floor as if head-butted, though referee Martin Atkinson saw no contact and booked both players.

Coventry boss Peter Reid tried to shake up his lethargic-looking side and introduced Andy Morrell and Gary McSheffrey. Morrell nearly made an instant impact when his header from Graham Barrett's left-wing cross dropped onto the crossbar with Graham Stack stranded.

Dichio repeated the trick at the other end when he rose to meet Josh Simpson's free-kick but it cannoned off the bar.

Ten minutes ahead of full-time Wise showed he can play football as well as cause trouble though, when he chipped a beautiful free-kick onto Dichio's head and the big striker made it third time lucky to give the visitors the points.
