Millwall crashed out of the UEFA Cup after being overwhelmed by Ferencvaros in the first half of the return leg of their first round tie in Hungary.

The Lions earned a creditable 1-1 draw in the first leg at The Den, but found themselves 3-1 down at the interval of the return, ensuring they lost 4-1 on aggregate.

Goals from Denes Rosa, Sorin Botis and Robert Vagner inside the first 40 minutes put Ferencvaros in total control, with Dennis Wise's effort on the stroke of half-time proving scant consolation.

Daniel Tozser, Rosa and Vagner all tested Millwall keeper Graham Stack in the opening ten minutes, but the on-loan Arsenal star was equal to the task.

The Hungarian side took a deserved lead after 26 minutes when Rosa met Vagner's cross and nodded the ball beyond Stack.

Five minutes later Botis headed another Rosa cross against the underside of the crossbar and when the ball bounced down the assistant referee controversially ruled it had crossed the line.

The home side then made sure of the tie after 40 minutes when Vagner's shot deflected off Darren Ward and beyond Stack to make it 3-0.

Jody Morris and David Livermore combined to set up Wise shortly before the break, but it was too little, too late.

The Lions' player-manager almost pulled another back in the early stages of the second half, but his drive drifted inches wide, before Neil Harris shot into the side netting from a promising position.

Peter Sweeney and Livermore both went close to giving the visitors hope, but Ferencvaros held on to take their place in the group stage of the competition.
