Tranmere were made to work hard by a lively Millwall side before they were able to record their sixth home victory which took them up to third place in the League One table.

The Merseysiders rocked Millwall with two goals in four minutes midway through the opening half, but it was not until the 89th minute that they finally settled matters with their third strike.

Millwall produced some terrific play at times which belied their lowly league placing. Certainly the Lions opened brightly and were unlucky with two good early efforts.

But in the 19th minute Gareth Taylor headed Tranmere in front at the far post from a cross by Chris Shuker.

Three minutes later Chris McCready forced the ball home from close range for his first Tranmere goal after Chris Greenacre's effort following a corner had been blocked.

Millwall refused to lie down and surprisingly made a double substitution ahead of the half-hour mark.

Ben May was one of the players to go on and within moments he saw an effort kicked off the line by McCready. Then he was just wide of the target from a short free-kick by Danny Senda.

But Millwall pulled a goal back in the 41st minute when Chris Hackett neatly chipped keeper Gavin Ward after inter-linking with Ben May.

Marvin Elliott blazed over soon after the interval and then, in the 54th minute, Ward saved well from an angled effort by Chris Zebroski.

Paul Robinson was next to get in a good strike which was turned over the bar by Ward. Then it needed a fine tackle by Ian Goodison to halt Zebroski.

But Tranmere finished well. Taylor was put through by Greenacre only to see his shot well-stopped by keeper Lenny Pidgeley.

John Mullin was then just wide from a Shuker pass before Shuker finally settled it in the 89th minute with an angled shot past Pidgely after a mistake by skipper Robinson.

Taylor and Shuker were excellent for the winners. Hackett and May were best for the losers who remain in the bottom four of the table after this seventh away reverse of the campaign.
