After a couple of years in the International wilderness, Anton Rogan was called up by Northern Ireland for one final hurrah after enjoying an Indian Summer with Millwall in the Second Division during the 1996/97 campaign.

He had joined The Lions the previous season and was described by then manager Jimmy Nicholl as an "honest pro" but he rarely made an appearance in The Lions first team as they somehow contrived to get relegated after being top of the League at Christmas. However, an injury to defender Jason Van Blerk on the eve of the new season saw Rogan thrust into the left-back spot where he proved to be something of a goal-scoring revelation, netting 8 times by the following May.

It was in the middle of this run that Rogan got his call-up as Northern Ireland prepared to face Germany in a World Cup Qualifier in Nurnberg. Nobody gave them much chance but they held out to earn a respectable 1-1 draw against the reigning European Champions and the Millwall defender played his part, coming on as a late sub for Neil Lennon to win the last of his 18 caps.
